Born in Fordyce, Arkansas, Kelly Fearing (1918-2011) entered college as an accounting major but quickly discovered his intense interest in art. He studied art at Louisiana Tech University and later at Columbia University. He taught public school briefly before relocating to Texas to teach art at the university level in El Paso and Fort Worth ultimately joining the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin.
